History:
In the 19th century German breeders crossed East Prussian stallions with
Oldenburg, Hanoverian, Friesian and Anglo- Norman horses resulting in the Westphalian.
Today the breed is closely related to the Hanoverian and an outstanding sports horse. The
main breeding centre of the Westphalian is in Warendorf, Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany. The
National Federation is also based there.
Characteristics:
good looking, clean cut sports horse
Head: intelligent looking; good width between eyes
Neck: long, well shaped
Body: deep, broad body; powerful hindquarters
Legs: long limbs
Feet: sound
Color: all solid colors
Height: 15.3 to 16.2hh
Temperament: good, intelligent
Qualities: strength, energetic action
Today:
The Westphalian has the confirmation of the modern sports horse and is
well suited for equestrian work. There are may famous Westphalian dressage and show
jumping champions in the world.
