LOU ROBERTSON

Lou Robertson was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia with a team of trotters in the early 1900s. He soon established himself in the trotting industry. Later Robertson became more interested in thoroughbred racing and obtained his trainer's licence.
In 1914 Lou Robertson had his first big win in the Adelaide Cup, followed by the Australian Cup. When he became the trainer for bookmaker / owner Sol Green in the 1920s Robertson won many races with Green's champion sprinter Gothic. His greatest achievement was winning the Melbourne Cup with Marabou in 1935.
In 1928-29 Lou Robertson was Melbourne's leading trainer. He continued to dominate Melbourne racing in the 1940s by winning the Trainer Premiership in 1943-44 and 1944-45. His last big win was the Caulfield Cup in 1949 with Lincoln.
In 1954 Lou Robertson retired. He is remembered as a great trainer and for being involved in many successful and spectacular betting plunges.
