ETIENNE DE MESTRE
1832-1916

Etienne de Mestre was the most successful jockey of his time. He achieved similar records to Bart Cummings. Etienne de Mestre trained Archer the winner of the first two runnings of the Melbourne Cup. With three further Melbourne Cup winners he set a record that lasted for 99 years until it was broken in 1977 by Bart Cummings. Etienne also successfully trained many horses for feature races.
