TRAINER PROFILES
COLIN S. HAYES, A.M., O.B.E.
Colin Hayes was a boilermaker before he started his career as a race
horse trainer. At the age of 28 he won his first Adelaide Premiership.
He trained 524 Group or Listed winners and 98 Group 1 winners, including the Melbourne Cup
winners in 1986 At Talaq and in 1980 Beldale Ball. His last season was also his best with
a prize money of just under $10 million, training 278 winners, achieving a Commonwealth
record and 13 Group 1 winners. Colin Hayes had trained 5,333 winners by the time he
retired in 1990 after 43 years.
Colin Hayes won the Adelaide Trainer Premiership 27 times and the Melbourne Trainer
Premiership in a succession of 13 times. In 1980 he received an OBE for his services to
racing.
He had to undergo major heart surgery in 1980. Colin Hayes died at his property Lindsay
Park, Angaston in South Australia on 21. May 1990 at the age of 75.
