GOLDEN SLIPPER STAKES

The Golden Slipper is the world's richest race for 2 year old horses. In 1957 George Ryder, then committeeman of the Sydney Turf Club, created a race exclusively for two year old horses. Special weights were set for colts and geldings at 8st 7lbs / 54kg and slightly lower for fillies at 8st / 51kg, allowing them a reasonable chance of defeating the colts and geldings. Until 2000 the Golden Slipper has been run 54 times with colts and geldings winning 27 times and fillies 17 times.

The first Golden Slipper was run in 1957 with 11 starters. The champion colt Todman, by Star Kingdom, come in first winning £20,000. Star Kingdom also sired the Golden Slipper winners for the next four years.
The prize money went from £20,000 for the first race to $2,500,000 in 2000 with the winner receiving $1,500,000 and trophies.
