RAE JOHNSTONE
+ 1964

At the age of 15 Rae "Togo" Johnstone rode his first win in Sydney in 1920. After a number of successful years he left Australia because of repeated clashes with racing officials. In 1934 he settled in France after traveling to India and England. Here he started his remarkable career winning more than 2000 races in nine countries. Johnstone won his first classic race in Europe in 1934 the 2000 Guineas followed by further 35 European Classics.
His riding performance in 1950 in classic races has never been matched by an Australian jockey abroad when he won the 1000 Guineas, the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, the Oaks, the St Leger, the Irish 1000 Guineas and the French Derby.
In 1957 Rae Johnstone retired as a jockey. Until his death in 1964 he trained horses in France.
