JACK PURTELL

Jack Purtell rode is first race in 1936. He won the Williamstown Cup in 1940 and Caulfield Cup in 1941 and soon become one of Melbourne's highly successful and popular jockeys in the 1940s and 1950s. He achieved three Melbourne Cup wins on Hiraji, Wodalla and Rising Fast. Jack Purtell rode Comic Court in 19 of his wins.
He won the first of his seven Jockey Premiership in the 1946-47 season and his last in the 1961-63 season.
In 1957 Jack Purtell started to ride in Europe and became successful in the 1960's when he associated with Vincent O'Brien winning the Irish Oaks in 1964 and the English Oaks in 1965.
During his career as a jockey Jack Purtell had ridden 1700 winners. When he retired he continued his association with horse racing as a Stipendiary Steward at the VRC.
