History:
It is believed that the Maremmano is a descendant of the Neapolitan horse. Maremmanos are bred in Tuscany, Italy and are the traditional horse of the cattlemen. Their overall appearance is a little coarse and improvements on confirmation are being made through cross breeding with Thoroughbred horses.
Maremmanos combine a quiet temperament with strength and toughness making them a good working horse. Because Maremmanos have an amenable nature they are used as police horses and in the army.

Today:
Maremmanos are not fast but they make good all-round riding horses. They are also suitable for cattle herding and light draught work.
